Another amazing review of my courtesy of Rob Clough. I like the Rob calls the piece a “quiet character study.” In a way the writing on that book was very influenced by the character study that is Abel Ferrara’s Bad Lieutenant.

Anyways, the book is available in stores in NYC and Portland, so go get yourself a copy.

Will be debuting at MoCCA 2010. I hope to see you there! If not, look for it in stores soon. And on this here website in like a year.

After watching Fall ‘95 I have been inspired to watch all of the videos on Ubu Web, to reeducate myself in art video and avant garde film. As all of my work is so reference heavy I felt it might be good to have a discussion on the use of homage /influence / sampling / stealing. To stir up discussion I present to you Sonic Outlaws from the Ubu Web site

The player will show in this paragraph

I had seen this video back in my under graduate days, but only now, nearly a decade later can I truly process it correctly. Having now read more about cut-up technique and culture jamming and situationalism, the message of the film is far clearer now than it was to my 19 year old self. Also, I have come to know the seeds spun off from these ideas. For a documentary made in 1995, it is frighteningly prescient about the media culture we would come to like in. One can’t look at TV Carnage without looking to Concrete TV, but you can’t really look at Concrete TV with remembering EBN. And mash ups? Well, “he was a little dog named snuggles”.

Last time I talked about my love of wrestlers. But they’re not the only ridiculous personalities I love. Where would I be without video artists. And above all Alex Bag. For all the hundreds of films I have watched, few will ever approach the magic that is Fall ‘95. Let’s watch some of it now.

The obnoxious acting, the bad wigs and cheesy sets. These are the elements that have always endeared me Alex’s work. But underneath it all, there’s such a brutal truth about being a disenfranchised youth.

I feel like all video artists have to live in the shadow of Fall ‘95. I really don’t think it can be topped.

So as the Monday Night Wars have started up again, I figured I might as well cop to my love of wrestling. Ever since I was a kid I have been fascinated by the pageantry and showiness of this male soap opera. And I of course love the extreme personalities.

Jam in the Band is another soap opera about extreme personalities. When I think about Bianca, and her vision of her own destiny, I cannot help but think of this Steve Austin promo:

To me, this is THE greatest promo in all of wrestling. When he delivers the line about, “I’m going to be the superstar I always knew I could be. Because there’s no one, no one, that can stop me,” It sends chills down my spine.

So with all this talk of documentaries and using the documentary structure in this comic, I felt it was time to show you how well versed I am in that structure. In other words, I have edited a lot of documentaries. Sadly they have almost all stalled out at the end, which always leaves me feeling unfulfilled if not unpaid.

But for your viewing pleasure today is a shortened version of the documentary / tour diary I am working on with NYC Bike-Core punk band Team Spider.

I am pretty proud of the high energy, whip pan style I have going with this documentary. But I have watched this footage so many hundreds of times, that it’s hard to tell if it works anymore.

As there’s been so much of Jennet in the story lately, here in all its 5 times revised glory is Stupid and Unkind. Which serves as a bit of a back story for Jennet, but also as my test run for many ideas that would later gel into Jam in the Band
