Last of the weekly remixes here. So I hope you enjoy Kylie Minogue’s Wow

This is one of my favorite remixes I did because it is SO extreme. The cutting so intense. The distortion so over the top. And with how little footage of her singing there was to cut in, I just decided to make the whole thing a swirl of colors. I do rather like how when she is onscreen, I made her ethereal and yet electronic. That’s one of the best effects I think I ever did. Sadly youtube isn’t really up to my quality standards for viewing this video. But I think you get it.

And can someone please get me into Kylie’s crazy retro future space man party? I NEED to be there.

This week’s remix is Every Heartbeat by Robyn

Ah, all my remix hallmarks. Re-framing shots, flashing lights, wave form simulations, effects on the beat. All the things I love in a remix video. Ha ha! Seriously I just tried to make those things look like video games. I think its a good aesthetic for the material.

Let me also say that Robyn is one awesome Swedish Pop Star. I was lucky enough to see her do an in-store at the late Virgin Megastore back in 2008. She did an entire set and seemed so grateful that the 50 or so people who had come out to see her knew all the words to her songs. And hey, I even took a picture of it.

The third and final issue of Life of Vice is on its way. And should be available for SPX this year, even if I am not in attendance. In the meantime, enjoy this very fine cover for said issue.

Another remix this week. This time for Nelly Furtado’s Maneater

So no flashy effects here. This video is all about precise cuts on beat. I preferred to make video this way. But I was often times using the effects to cover up for a lack of footage or the dramatic change in tempo between the original song and the remix. Not so here. Any video that had lots of people dancing was a joy to cut. Minor edits or mirrored versions of shot allow for much more repetition. There’s a few quick wipes in there, but I don’t think they call too much attention to themselves.

BTW. I seriously loved this part of Nelly Furtado’s career. Loose had so many great hits on it. But you know, that might just be Timbaland’s doing.

Another one of my remixes. This time a remix I did of The Pet Shop Boys’s Minimal

This video is well in keeping with the style of remixes I was into doing. It was the great joke of the whole thing. I was making videos for dance clubs having never been to one myself. I just imagined what I though dance clubs would be like and made videos based around that concept. And by concept, I mean LASERS. This is my whole trick. Make the lights flash to the beat and you’ve got yourself a hot video.

Well folks, I’ve made it. I am in the New York times. Sort of. I’m in the background of this shot in connection with this article on the Prince of Persia movie.

Ha ha! Thank you Jim Hanley’s Universe for so prominently displaying my work.

There will be a lot of Daft Punk talk here on the site this week. So I figured it was as good a time as any to show you something I had done in relation to those fabulous French robots.

This is a remix video for the song Technologic off the Human After All album. Now, to put things in context. I literally got paid to make this. That’s right, my job was to remix music videos. Over the next couple weeks I will be posting a few more of these videos and discussing them. But for now let me give you a few notes on this one here.

I love what I did with the keying here. How the robot’s face sometimes floats in a ghostly way over the image. I also really like the weird colored circles within circles I cooked up. I didn’t have much to work with or much time. But I like the results. This is also my most viewed video on youtube, with nearly 300 thousand hits. Crazy!

On the good news front I am proud to announce my books (Life of Vice #1 / #2 and Controller) are now all available from the fine folks over at Microcosm. Let me say it is an honor and a privilege to be represented by such an awesome organization. Much thanks to Sparky for all her help in getting Microcosm to pick me up.

So you should read this awesome three part interview Brain Heater over at The Daily Cross Hatch did with me and Jamie Tanner. I’ve know Jamie for years, so it was awesome to have one of our conversations turned into a fancy interview.

P.S. Here’s that surfin’ whale. I love that guy.

Nice review of Life of Vice #1 up on Optical Sloth. Ya’ll should check it out.

BTW: If I’m not in Swedish SPX this weekend, I will try to be at Stumptown.
