So there’s always background details that have more and more meaning. In this case, look for Black Mesa to appear time and time again in the background of this story. It’s obviously a nod to Half Life, but the more and more I used Black Mesa as a fake band, the more I thought about what sort of band they must be. In my mind, Black Mesa is essentially Tribe 8.
Which I like, because in writing Jam in the Band, Lynn Breedlove’s Godspeed was essential material in defining some of the emotional tone. And their documentary Rise Above, is of course required viewing.
Holy shit! Tribe 8? Yes! I was at their very first performance. I used to hang out with those guys. They had a big influence on me.
