After watching Fall ’95 I have been inspired to watch all of the videos on Ubu Web, to reeducate myself in art video and avant garde film. As all of my work is so reference heavy I felt it might be good to have a discussion on the use of homage /influence / sampling / stealing. To stir up discussion I present to you Sonic Outlaws from the Ubu Web site

I had seen this video back in my under graduate days, but only now, nearly a decade later can I truly process it correctly. Having now read more about cut-up technique and culture jamming and situationalism, the message of the film is far clearer now than it was to my 19 year old self. Also, I have come to know the seeds spun off from these ideas. For a documentary made in 1995, it is frighteningly prescient about the media culture we would come to like in. One can’t look at TV Carnage without looking to Concrete TV, but you can’t really look at Concrete TV with remembering EBN. And mash ups? Well, “he was a little dog named snuggles”.
